Moon over Miami
Shine on my love and me
So we can stroll beside the roll
Of the rolling sea

Moon over Miami
Shine on as we begin
A dream or two that may come true
When the tide comes in

Hark to the song of the smiling troubadours
Hark to the throbbing guitars
Hear how the waves offer thunderous applause
After each song to the stars

Moon over Miami
You know we're waiting for
A little love, a little kiss
On Miami shore

Die Moritat von Mackier Messer
Kurt Weill und Bertholdt Brecht (1928)

Lenya Lotte
und The Turk Murphy Jazz Band (1955)

Und der Haifisch, der hat Zähne
und die trägt er im Gesicht
und Macheath, der hat ein Messer
doch das Messer sieht man nicht

An 'nem schönen blauen Sonntag
liegt ein toter Mann am Strand
und ein Mensch geht um die Ecke
den man Mackie Messer nennt

Und Schmul Meier bleibt verschwunden
und so mancher reiche Mann
und sein Geld hat Mackie Messer
dem man nichts beweisen kann

Jenny Towler ward gefunden
mit 'nem Messer in der Brust
und am Kai geht Mackie Messer
der von allem nichts gewußt

Und das große Feuer in Soho
sieben Kinder und ein Greis
in der Menge Mackie Messer den
man nicht fragt und der nichts weiss

Und die minderjährige Witwe
deren Namen jeder weiss
wachte auf und war geschändet
Mackie, welches war dein Preis

David Hughes, tenor (1968)

You are my heart's delight
And where you are I long to be

You make my darkness bright
When like a star you shine on me

Shine - then my whole life through
Your life divine bid me hope anew

That dreams of mine may by chance come true
And I shall hear you whisper - I love you

In dreams when night is falling
I seem to hear you calling
For you have cast a net around me
Underneath a magic spell have bound me
Yours - yours alone

How wondrous fair is your beautiful hair
Bright lies a summer sky is the light in your eyes
Soft as the turtle dove is the voice of my love

You are my heart's delight
And where you are I long to be

You make my darkness bright
When like a star you shine on me

Shine - then my whole life through
Your life divine bid me hope anew

That dreams of mine may by chance come true
And I shall hear you ever - I love you

Giving Offenbach a Break

Today is Jacques Offenbach's birthday (20 June 1819 - 5 October 1880), so I will get off his back. Instead, I have uploaded a memory insurance selection on this first day of summer for 2012.

So, as it were, "I stand, and I wait for the touch of your hand in the June night..."

The Norman Luboff Choir (1993)
- Sleepy Lagoon

(By the) Sleepy Lagoon (1930)
Words: Jack Lawrence
Music: Eric Coates

The Norman Luboff Choir (1993)

The sleepy lagoon, a tropical moon and two on an island
The sleepy lagoon and two hearts in tune in some lullabyland
The fireflies' gleam reflects in the stream
They sparkle and shimmer
A star from on high falls out of the sky
And slowly grows dimmer

The leaves from the trees all dance in the breeze
And float on the ripples
We're deep in a spell as nightingales tell
Of roses and dew

The memory of this moment of love
Will haunt me forever
A tropical moon, a sleepy lagoon
And you

[Orchestral Bridge]

The memory of this moment of love
Will haunt me forever
A tropical moon, a sleepy lagoon
And you

Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, soprano (1993)
- Smoke Gets in Your Eyes (Harbach & Kern)

Smoke Gets in Your Eye
Words: Otto Harbach
Music: Jerome Kern
In the 1933 Broadway musical "Roberta", starring Bob Hope and Faye Templeton

Artist: Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, soprano (1993)

They asked me how I knew
My true love was true.
I, of course, replied,
"Something here inside
Cannot be denied".

They said, "Someday you'll find
All who love are blind,
When your heart's on fire,
You must realize
Smoke gets in your eyes".

So I chaffed them
And I gaily laughed
To think they could doubt my love
Yet today
My love has flown away
I am without my love.

Now laughing friends deride
Tears I cannot hide.
So I smile and say,
"When a lovely flame dies,
Smoke gets in your eyes".

[Orchestral Interlude]

I am without my love.
Now laughing friends deride
Tears I cannot hide.
So I smile and say,
"When a lovely flame dies,
Smoke gets in your eyes".

Tip-Toe Thru' the Tulips with Me

Annette Hanshaw

This MP3 Selection Expired on 04-25-2006:
Tip-Toe Thru' the Tulips with Me
Annette Hanshaw, 1929

Words: Al Dubin
Music: Joe Burke
"Gold Diggers of Broadway" (1929)

Shades of night are creeping
Willow trees are weeping
Old folks and babies are sleeping
Silver stars are gleaming
All alone I'm scheming
Scheming to get you out here my dear

Come tip-toe to the window
By the window that is where I'll be
Come tip-toe thru' the tulips with me

Tip-toe from your pillow
To the shadow of a willow tree
And tip-toe thru' the tulips with me

Knee deep in flowers we'll stray
We'll keep the showers away

And if I kiss you in the garden
In the moonlight will you pardon me
Come tip-toe thru' the tulips with me

(Interlude)

Tip-toe thru' the window by the window
That is where I'll be
Come tip-toe thru' the tulips with me

Tip-toe from your pillow
To the shadow of the willow tree
And tip-toe thru' the tulips with me

Just knee deep in flowers we'll stray
And we'll keep the April showers away

And if I kiss you in the garden
In the moonlight will you pardon me
Come tip-toe thru' the tulips
Tip tip-toe thru' the tulips with me

Lale Andersen (1939 Recording)

Vor der Kaserne
Vor dem großen Tor
Stand eine Laterne
Und steht sie noch davor
So wollen wir uns da wiedersehen
Bei der Laterne wollen wir stehen
Wie einst Lili Marleen
Wie einst Lili Marleen

(At the barracks compound,
By the entry way
There a lantern I found
And if it stands today
Then we'll see each other again
Near that old lantern we'll remain
Just as before, Lili Marleen
Just as before, Lili Marleen)

Unsere beide Schatten
Sahen wie einer aus
Daß wir so lieb uns hatten
Das sah man gleich daraus
Und alle Leute sollen es sehen
Wenn wir bei der Laterne stehen
Wie einst Lili Marleen
Wie einst Lili Marleen

(Both our shadows meeting
Melding into one
Our love was not fleeting
And plain to everyone
Then all the people shall behold
When we stand by that lantern old
Just as before, Lili Marleen
Just as before, Lili Marleen)

Schon rief der Posten
Sie blasen Zapfenstreich
Das kann drei Tage kosten
Kam'rad ich komm sogleich
Da sagten wir auf wiedersehen
Wie gerne wollt ich mit dir gehen
Mit dir Lili Marleen
Mit dir Lili Marleen

(Then the guard to me says
There's tap call, let's retreat
This could cost you three days
I'll be there in a heart beat
So that was when we said farewell
Though with you I would rather dwell
With you, Lili Marleen
With you, Lili Marleen)

Deine Schritte kennt sie
Deinen zieren Gang
Alle Abend brennt sie
Doch mich vergaß sie lang
Und sollte mir ein Leids geschehen
Wer wird bei der Laterne stehen
Mit dir Lili Marleen
Mit dir Lili Marleen

(Well she knows your foot steps
By your own insoucian gait
Every evening waiting for
Me? Memories of late
Should something ever happen to me
Who will under the lantern be
With you, Lili Marleen
With you, Lili Marleen)

Aus dem stillen Raume
Aus der Erde Grund
Hebt mich wie im Traume
Dein verliebter Mund
Wenn sich die späten Nebel drehn
Werd' ich bei der Laterne stehn
Wie einst Lili Marleen
Wie einst Lili Marleen

(From my quiet existence
And from this earthly pale
Like a dream you set free me
With your fragrant lips I inhale
When the night mists swirl and churn
Then to that lantern I'll return
Just as before, Lili Marleen
Just as before, Lili Marleen)

Bea Wain (1939)
- Deep Purple (De Rose & Parish)

Music: Peter De Rose (1934)
Lyrics: Mitchell Parish (1939)

Top of the Chart: Larry Clinton & His Orchestra (1939)
with Bea Wain

When the deep purple fall
Over sleepy garden wall
And the stars begin to flicker in the sky
Through the mist of a memory
You wander back to me
Breathing my name with a sigh

In the still of the night
Once again I hold you tight
Though you're gone
Your love lives on when moonlight beams
And as long as my heart will beat
Lover we'll always meet
Here in my deep purple dreams

(Instrumental interlude)

In the still of the night
Once again I hold you tight
Though you're gone
Your love lives on when moonlight beams
And as long as my heart will beat
Lover we'll always meet
Here in my deep purple dreams
