A Field for Chopin

Perhaps when you listen to a Nocturne (a small form in classical music), most likely the name Chopin would come to mind. It was really John Field who first elevated the Nocturne to the status later achieved by Chopin and other great romatic composers.

- How Beautiful Is Night (Farnon)

How Beautiful Is Night
Composer: Robert Farnon
Vocalist: Catrina Valente (1972)
A Bossa Nova arrangement

When I see the night
My heart is lost in flight
To some enchanted land beyond the blue
And oh, how beautiful is night with you

Stars awake, and rise, and smile
Before my eyes
I’m in a wonderland
I never knew
And oh, how beautiful is night with you

The moon is new
And love holds me fast
And you are mine at last

We kiss and then
My heart sings again

When I see the night
My dreams will hold you tight
I know I’ll find you
When each day is through
And oh, how beautiful is night with you

[Guitar Interlude]

I’m in a wonderland
I never knew
And oh, how beautiful is night with you

Finally, the Lymond Chronicles, Book 4

After months of meandering and dawdling in the literature canyon, this afternoon I finally emerged holding in my hand triumphantly a finished read of 'The Disorderly Knight'; this book being Dorothy Dunnett's third book of a six-book series nicknamed the Lymond Chronicles.

Déjà le ciel aux Indes rougissoit
Et l'aulbe encor' de ses tresses tant blondes
Faisant gresler mille perlettes rondes
De ses trésors les prez enrichissoit

There it is. Onward to book four of the series, 'Pawn in Frankincense'.

Richard Clayderman, piano (2000)
- The Star Spangled Banner (Key)

Also, here is text to the long forgotten national hymn written on 4 July 1876. It was written for the celebration of the 100th birthday of these United States.
It is still being sung, however, in conservative Christian churches today.

God of Our Fathers
Words: Daniel C. Roberts
Music: George W. Warren
Date: 4 July 1876

God of our fathers, Whose almighty hand
Leads forth in beauty all the starry band
Of shining worlds in splendor through the skies
Our grateful songs before Thy throne arise.

Thy love divine hath led us in the past,
In this free land by Thee our lot is cast,
Be Thou our Ruler, Guardian, Guide and Stay,
Thy Word our law, Thy paths our chosen way.

From war’s alarms, from deadly pestilence,
Be Thy strong arm our ever sure defense;
Thy true religion in our hearts increase,
Thy bounteous goodness nourish us in peace.

Refresh Thy people on their toilsome way,
Lead us from night to never ending day;
Fill all our lives with love and grace divine,
And glory, laud, and praise be ever Thine.
